In June 1840...
... two merchants from Bytom, Mr. M. Friedlander and Mr. S. Lowi had began the development of a new company named "Friedens-Eisenhutte" which became the base for the steelworks Huta "Pokoj". The company's intension was its dynamical growth through the expansion of its range of products. The enterprise employed 120 workers in 1875 and in 1913 the number grew to 5743.
After the end of the First World War and the three Silesian Uprisings, Huta "Pokoj" became a part of the new and reshaped state of Poland. In 1934 the Polish State Treasury took over the majority of the shares in the company and in effect a steelwork became the largest state owned metallurgical company. During the same year Polish inventor Mr. Tadeusz Sendzimir constructed and installed a planetary rolling pen that, for many years, revolutionized the rolling mill practices. After the Second World War the company became a technical base for professional training of new technicians deeply needed for the emerging Polish metallurgical industry. At the same time the company producted a full range of steel products.
In 80's the company's restructuring program was implemented to convert it from a merely raw material supplier into a modern technological company producing highly - developed metallurgical products.
In 1992 Huta "Pokoj" S.A. was transformed into a join-stock company wholly - owned by the State Treasury. In 1995 its shares were contributed to the NFI General Privatization Program and the 3rd National Investment Fund owed the leading shareholding.
At the beginning of 2000 a private strategic investor - "Colloseum" - Financial and Investment Consortium Ltd - became the majority shareholder.
Nowadays, "Huta Pokój" S.A. modernizes and expands its activity beyond the steel production. This process is supported by comprehensive restructuring program performed since 1997. The undertaken activities and ventures are aimed at the creation of the holding organization. In 1995 "Huta Pokoj" S.A. attained ISO Certification. Our products are also recognized by renowned Classification Associations.
