Company description
The history of Puck Mechanical Works goes back to the year 1923. In these days reparing and overhauling works had originated, which were servicing sea-going vessels (among others torpedo boats, gun boats, tugs, motor-boats) and emerging sea aviation (a marine wing, which was quartering at the ground of present PZM AMEX). At the beginning the Works consisted of a mechanical department, a joiner's shop, a pattern-shop, a small foundry, a smithy, a welding shop and a hull workshop. The Works were also realising orders for civil companies. The orders were often not closed related to marine industry.
During the Second World War the Works as a department of Gdynia Shipyard (Deutsche Verke Kiel in these days) were reparing German motor gun boats, and producing spare parts for torpedoes.
After regaining independence in the year 1945, PZM were restorating fishing abilities of fishing vessels. In the 50s one started the first marine diesel engines, in the power range of 50 (A-50), 75 (A-75) and 100 hp (A-100), which were used to drive fishing boats. One appeared also marine engines of RENAG series. The engines had power of 75 and 120 hp and were continually modernising. They were used to drive in-land vessels, mainly barges, pushboats 'Tur', and fishing boats as well. Boats engines were also produced these days, type of P-10 (10 hp) and P-20 (20 hp), and some time later new types: P-12 and P-24z, which were exported among others to former USRR, Romania and Korea.
At the beginning of 60s a new marine engine of type P-150 came into the production, and at the end of that period another one, type of 4P-19.5, which was mostly installed on fishing boats. For this engine a reduction-reversing gear was designed, which replaced a construction, imported from the former West Germany. In these days the company started a co-operation with H. Cegielski Poznan S.A., for which reduction-reversing gears and cylindrical heads for diesel engines were produced. In 1968 one began a production of a marine engine type of 1 DR 10/14, which was intended for driving coastal fishing boats.
Radical changes took place at the beginning of 70s, when in PZM the oldish middle-power engines were phased out, and the production of the old type boat engines was limited. Instead, new and modern marine engines came into production. There were: DELFIN, KRAB and REKIN, which based on engines produced in Mielec and Andrychów under licence of Leyland. For this marine construtcion PZM were awarded with the second-degree national prize. The marine low-power engines were replaced with new ones, modern four-stroke "LIN" and "SUM", which were produced in a co-operation with the German company Hatz. In these days PZM made an agreement with H. Cegielski Poznan S.A., and became the only producer of heads for generator engines and traction ones. All that time the company kept developing and modernising the production, and was investing in new machine tools. As a result great part of production was being exported to the following countries: USRR, former West Germany, Egypt, Iceland, Sweden, Denmark, Cuba, England, Argentina and Vietnam.
In 80s the Works kept producing the marine engines, and started new types. One can mention: PUCK-29, PUCK-38 and PUCK-50. The stock of machine tools was enlarged by introducing new CNC machine tools, which improved profoundly quality of our products. The new machine tools and qualification of the stuff enabled our company to master production of spare parts and components of new generation aggregate marine engines.
The beginning of 90s was for the Works quite a new challenge. PZM started to act according to the rules of free market economy, and since April 1995 the Works have acted in quite different organisation structures. Service Trading /Marine/ AMEX Ltd. , one of the major Polish company involved in marine business, became our main shareholders, and a new name of the works is now Puck Mechanical Works AMEX Ltd. The production of new marine generators type of ZP-20 and ZP-125 has been started, and a new version of the marine engines, designed to work in tropical conditions (DELFIN 3S i DELFIN 3TS), were elaborated. The Works, besides past activities, started new ones.
At present we have been producing components of different marine equipment. We offer services in the broad range of mechanical engineering. We have been producing rack-and-pinions, steering engines, and deck devices for our clients from Germany, Norway, Dutch and Denmark. Our foundry gained new quality by getting for its products LRS and PRS certificates.
